Storied building
Building for three-storied, shaped complex of 21 home units which is the best for architecture designs. Travis & Partners, a top design award for conversion of an existing building. The name not only refers to its age—it began life in the 1890s as a flour mill — but also its long tenancy as a warehouse by Winery. The beautiful oak paneling originally installed by Winery for their offices was retained to grace the new foyer, along with wine casks, a replica of an early grape press, and a dramatic mural of old photographs on the main staircase. Frontage on two streets and a side lane allowed plenty of light and ventilation, and all essential services and fire precautions were installed.
Volume as well as floor space was utilized by vertical division of lofty upper-floor units (note mezzanine bedroom over semi open-plan kitchen, at far right Unique features were retained add character to the diversity c unit shapes: only four of the 1st floor plans are the same. For example, as shown here in a display unit furnished by Art Studios, the huge iron-bark pillars and the ceiling beams were sandblasted and original loading-dock doors kept. Kaufman’s Paints specially mixed a driftwood color to give softness and warmth to the walls. A rear courtyard deck, above basement garages and lock-up stores, has been landscaped for the communal use of tenants.
