Lighting for home and office (III)

Lighting for home and office 3Two swivel-headed B70/2 track lights from the Majestic Collection are controlled by HPM dimmer. One focuses on painting, the other on plants (from Gone Potty of Lane Cove) on a slatted stand. WH4 pendant lamp from Majestic has a pull cord to adjust its height over dining or coffee tables; the light can be dispersed over a wide area, or concentrated; a dimmer gives further control.

The beam may be adjusted by moving the lamp holder (reflector) against the globe to give a stronger or a more diffused light. When used correctly, the track fitting is unobtrusive; instead of being a noticeable feature in itself, it directs attention towards whatever it illuminates. For general purposes the fitting should have a reflector-back globe to give a controlled but more dispersed beam. Before installing recessed down-lights, check on the space available above your ceiling. Many houses cannot take lights recessed flush with the ceiling, but there are surface-mounted down-lights available to do the same job.

Recessed or surface-mounted down-lights come with a range of tinted reflectors, something to take into account when you choose fittings for each particular room. For example, a silver reflector delivers a cold white light; a gold one gives a warm light; plum reflects a slightly pinkish tinge, and black gives a very subdued effect. Gold reflectors are the most popular; the warm light brings up the green in anything it shines on, thus when focused on indoor plants will make them look more appealing. The plum reflector brings out the wood grain in furniture. The subdued gleam from a black reflector is restful for hallways.
