Lighting for home and office (I)
The right lighting can dramatize special areas within a room; add an air of warmth and coziness, even appear to alter dimensions. Strategically placed outdoors, it makes a mundane suburban garden look like a fairyland. We consulted the expert for advice on how to achieve the best effects, and photographed some successful installation. Turned on dusk, surface-mounted down-lights illuminate an arched terrace that overlooks a pool. Lighting was planned and put in by focus lighting and lanterns placed by focus reflect soft light from slate paving around a pool area and flank an entrance, picking out the beautiful bole of a tree.
Domestic lighting has progressed a long way from the ubiquitous center-ceiling fitting that cast a stark, flat overall light. Table lamps and floor standards improved things, but room lighting has become even more versatile and efficient with the use of ceiling-recessed and/or track-mounted spots. The science of modern illumination has developed its own terminology. This includes: Reflector, the internal part of a down-light of the dish of a spotlight which scoops up the light and throws it out. Wall-washer, is placed close to a wall and lights half of it, to pick up pictures, hangings etc. Wall-washer & Down-light washes wall and floor, shelves and seating area close to them. (Kempton have an excellent wall washer down light in their Dark-lighter range).
