His and her home offices
Do working couples need double workspace at home? Sometimes the couple pictured on the facing page solved a work space problem by using two separate rooms. The owners of the offices on this page share working space. All three offices make maximum use of space. On the facing page, “her” built-in, ceiling-high desk unit features vertical spacers that organize desk supplies, reference books, and telephone books. Bookcases in both “her” and “his” offices include slanted racks for two rows of magazines. Both desks rest on file cabinets.
On this page, both offices make use of former closet space. The two desks shown at left are in a former entryway; one is in the old coat closet, the other is next to a floor-to-ceiling storage cabinet. His and her office shown below was one a study with two closets. The closets are now part of a desk and shelving system. The shelves slip between grooves formed by cedar slats lining the entire room. A cabinet that extends into the middle of the room and wide filing cabinets under a counter on the back wall provide more storage and work space. Models of efficient planning, all these home offices show you how to make the most of available space.
Once an entry, now a two person office
An extensive remodeling job moved the front entrance, so the architect took advantage of the old entry space and turned into a small home office for both husband and wife. Desk at right is in a former closet. The front door used to be straight ahead, now it’s a full length window. Architect: Duane Duff.
Down-light in an upbeat study
Protruding down-light illuminates the desk revealed when the sliding doors are pushed back. Track light and a large window provide the background light in this colorful multipurpose room.
