A whole new setting (I)
A quiet Englishmen and his wife, both of whom have lived in Singapore for many years, came to the designer recently. They had ideas of extending their oldies house which is on the fringe of the hill from which the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation beamed the republic’s news throughout Asia—an area which is semi-jungle in the heart of concrete and brick new developments. On the face of it the task seemed to be a run of the mill one which did not demand much excitement. It was the usual “give me more space for the family and my motor car.” And the designer has a look at their problem. When the designer arrived at the house he lack of interest disappeared right away.
The designer found that the existing two-storey house was set in a very large garden. There, at least 25 bird cages were in the main garage and the birds were trying to out sing each other. There were bird baths all over the large expanse of garden not be endangered by any new buildings because the couple were true naturalists. Their basic request was for an extension around the garden area and found some distance from the house that there had obviously been an earlier building on the site. On questioning my client I learned that there had been a community Septic Tank on the site but that it had been filled in when main drainage came to the area.
