A whole new setting 1A quiet Englishmen and his wife, both of whom have lived in Singapore for many years, came to the designer recently. They had ideas of extending their oldies house which is on the fringe of the hill from which the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation beamed the republic’s news throughout Asia—an area which is semi-jungle in the heart of concrete and brick new developments. On the face of it the task seemed to be a run of the mill one which did not demand much excitement. It was the usual “give me more space for the family and my motor car.” And the designer has a look at their problem. When the designer arrived at the house he lack of interest disappeared right away. His and her home officesDo working couples need double workspace at home? Sometimes the couple pictured on the facing page solved a work space problem by using two separate rooms. The owners of the offices on this page share working space. All three offices make maximum use of space. On the facing page, “her” built-in, ceiling-high desk unit features vertical spacers that organize desk supplies, reference books, and telephone books. Bookcases in both “her” and “his” offices include slanted racks for two rows of magazines. Both desks rest on file cabinets. (more…)
