A whole new setting 2Well as much as any heart would sing when faced with a cesspool. The designer said very interesting in making their extension and when he got back to his office he asked for architects drawing of the original cesspool. The designer had found precisely what he expected. It was deeply sunk into the ground on piles and the foundations of a building which measures some twenty-four feet by thirty-seven feet were there to be exploited. I completed a series of site drawings. I visualized the whole new setting of the old house. Certainly there was need for a new dining room in the old place. But apart from that there was nothing startling to be done. But that cesspool really switched me on as an architect. (more…)

A whole new setting 1A quiet Englishmen and his wife, both of whom have lived in Singapore for many years, came to the designer recently. They had ideas of extending their oldies house which is on the fringe of the hill from which the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation beamed the republic’s news throughout Asia—an area which is semi-jungle in the heart of concrete and brick new developments. On the face of it the task seemed to be a run of the mill one which did not demand much excitement. It was the usual “give me more space for the family and my motor car.” And the designer has a look at their problem. When the designer arrived at the house he lack of interest disappeared right away.
